But behind the headlines—wrestling gators, surviving hurricanes in bathtubs, and starting backyard firework wars—Florida Man guards one of the South’s best-kept secrets: his Alligator Gumbo recipe.
The tale begins decades ago in a hidden shack outside Ochopee, where a young Florida Man—known only as “Buckshot”—learned to cook from his Cajun great-uncle, Thibodaux "Toothy" LeBeau. Toothy could catch a gator with a rope and cook it in a pot the size of a washtub, seasoned with nothing but instinct and a flask of hot sauce.
Florida Man inherited more than Toothy's recipe. He inherited the code—a sworn oath that true gumbo must be earned, not just made. That meant hunting the gator himself, hand-stirring the roux under a full moon, and never, ever sharing the recipe.
