Known around the docks and marinas of the San Francisco Bay as “Chef Casual Gumbo Man,” this laid-back culinary adventurer has spent years blending the soulful traditions of Southern gumbo with the bold flavors of Korean comfort food. Alongside his loyal corgi companions, Dewy and Junebug, his partners in crime, he has become a familiar face at community cook-offs, sailing regattas, and waterfront gatherings throughout the Bay Area.
His culinary journey began during his travels through South Korea, where he first discovered Budae-jjigae — the famous Korean “army stew” born from resilience, creativity, and shared meals after the Korean War. Fascinated by its rich broth, spicy depth, and communal spirit, he saw surprising similarities between Korean stew culture and Louisiana gumbo traditions.
After returning home to California, he refined his own signature version of Korean gumbo while working as a sous chef during sailing regattas along the Alameda–Oakland Estuary in the San Francisco Bay. Feeding hungry sailors after long days on the water taught him the importance of hearty, comforting meals that bring people together. His dockside cooking quickly became legendary among crews and race organizers alike.
Today, Chef Casual Gumbo Man is known for combining smoky sausage, Gulf-style seafood, kimchi, gochujang, fresh vegetables, and deeply layered stock into a one-of-a-kind Bay Area fusion gumbo. His easygoing personality, weathered sailor style, and passion for cultural storytelling through food make him an unforgettable presence wherever he cooks.
At Gumbo Fest 2026, he proudly presents his signature Korean Gumbo — a San Francisco Bay-inspired take on Budae-jjigae that celebrates friendship, travel, resilience, and the universal power of a good bowl of stew shared with others.
